Bird species at Sítio do Cervo endemic to the Atlantic Forest
NB. The definition of endemic species used on this site follows the list provided in the Birdlife International and SAVE Brasil publication, Important Bird Areas of Brazil, Part I (2006). This is based on the following criteria: a species is endemic to the Atlantic Forest when the nominate subspecies (ie the "primary" species from which other subspecies have evolved) occurs only within that biome. So for example, the Yellow-legged Tinamou (Crypturellus noctivagus) is endemic even though one subspecies (Crypturellus noctivagus zabele) can be found in the semi-arid Caatinga region of North-East Brazil: the nominate race found here, Crypturellus noctivagus noctivagus, is confined to the lowland coastal forests. On the other hand, the Channel-billed Toucan is NOT endemic, even though the subspecies found here, Ramphastos vitellinus ariel, is confined to the Atlantic Forest: the nominate subspecies in this case, Ramphastos vitellinus vitellinus, occurs in the North-East Amazon. Just so you know.
Also bear in mind that because the Atlantic Forest biome extends into Eastern Paraguay and the Misiones province of Argentina, several of the endemic species here are not in fact confined to Brazil.
