Restricted-range species at Sítio do Cervo
A bird species is defined as having a restricted range when the total area in which it can be found in the wild is less than 50,000 square kilometres. The overlap zones between the breeding ranges of two or more of these restricted-range species are described as Endemic Bird Areas (EBAs). Of the 218 EBAs worldwide, nine are within the Atlantic Forest biome. Sítio do Cervo lies in one of these, known as EBA 75 or Lowland Atlantic Forest, which includes no fewer than 55 restricted-range species. Birdlife International has drawn up a network of Important Bird Areas (IBAs) worldwide, designed to help prioritise conservation efforts, and the number of restricted-range species registered in an area is one of the criteria used to select these. In the Atlantic Forest the threshold used for qualifying as an IBA under this criterion is a site where there are records of at least half the maximum number of restricted-range species found in any one place. In the case of EBA 75, the maximum found is 24 species, so the minimum qualifying number is 12. So far we have identified 11 restricted-range species at Sítio do Cervo, and they are listed below.
